The Facts About Injuries and Turf

This short video summarizes the results of a study conducted by Penn State's Center for Sports Surface Research, which falls under the College of Agricultural Studies.  I am pretty confident that these researchers have no predisposition in favor of synthetic turf.   In fact, they would probably be more predisposed to natural grass of the quality found at their own Beaver Stadium.  More importantly, this study was funded by the Center itself, and not by (or conducted for) a synthetic turf company or natural grass sod farm. The results of this study speak for themselves.

  1. We all know that Penn State makes the best decisions concerning the safety of their players. The evidence is the death penalty that may be bestowed upon them.

  2. I debated whether or not to accept the prior comment but then decided that it is best to let everyone appreciate the ignorance of those who wish to anonymously engage in this debate, and frankly any other debate in our community. Idiotic comments like that one only help to solidify support for our proposal.

  5. Mr. Franklin,
I'm curious about what happens next in the process?
What is the current status on the proposal?
What can the community do to help move this forward?

  6. On another Lebo blog, it has been suggested that turf does not add any additional spots during a thunderstorm. Well, of course no one is playing on turf or grass in a thunderstorm. Common sense is still the rule.

However, as soon as the thunderstorm ends, the artificial turf is back in play. Cancellations are limited solely to the period of the thunderstorm itself.

  7. With respect to the process, some good news came from the Commission's discussion session on July 10. Specifically, 4 of the 5 Commissioners stated that they would support a comprehensive Rec bond that would be applied to pool improvements, ice rink updates, field improvements, etc. This step is significant in my opinion because it now allows everyone to engage in a discussion regarding the size of the bond and what should be included.

At this point, I think members of the community can help move this forward by communicating their support of the turf proposal to the commissioners. Two residents attended the last Commission meeting to speak against the turf proposal, so it would also be helpful if residents who support turf can participate in upcoming meetings. Please don't assume someone else is going to speak on your behalf!!

I will attempt to provide information about upcoming meetings on this site.
